Day One: Favourite Character

Spock. Duh. I mean, come on. It’s Spock. He’s the most relatable character in the entire Star Trek phenomena. Even though he’s only half human, he is the most human. While it’s true that he is the logical extreme that balances out McCoy’s emotional extreme, Spock is the character that represents the mind AND the heart. He embodies the feeling of non-belonging. He embodies the sentiment that we must not show our emotions, that the mind is more powerful than the heart. And although he tries with all his might to be a Vulcan, the human in him always slips through. He cannot change who or what he is, no matter how hard he tries. And that is what resonates in the viewers. That is what makes him relatable. Plus, he’s hilarious and adorable.

So say we all, damnit.

(Kirk turns to see a policeman while carrying a load of stolen clothes.) POLICEMAN: Well? KIRK: You’re a police officer. I recognize the traditional accoutrements. SPOCK: You were saying you’ll have no trouble explaining it. KIRK: My friend is obviously Chinese. … I see you’ve noticed the ears. They’re actually easy to explain. (A crowd is gathering.) SPOCK: (clearly enjoying the situation) Perhaps the unfortunate accident I had as a child. KIRK: The unfortunate accident he had as a child. [fumbling] He caught his head in a… mechanical rice picker. But fortunately, there was an American missionary living close by who was actually a, uh, skilled plastic surgeon in civilian life—POLICEMAN: All right, all right. Drop those bundles and put your hands on that wall there! Come on!

Because this scene is easily one of my favourites.
